Taking one’s own life is called ‘suicide’. It is a severe public health issue and affects youth also. Suicide is highly common among youth between the ages of 10 to 24 and is third primary cause of death. It is estimated that each year 4600 lives are lost due to suicide. The three major methods used by young people to commit suicide are:
The rate of suicide is different among various age groups but affects all youth. Girls are less expected than boys to die from this action although greater attempts are done by girls. There are many factors that increase risk of suicide but it doesn’t always mean that suicide will occur. Risk factors are mentioned below:
The finale of childhood and start of adolescence are the challenging periods of life due to various changes in hormones and increase in school and professional workloads. The single significant event can lead the child to attempt suicide like assaults, divorce of parents or loss of loved one. Some personal psychological factors are also responsible such as anxiety, anti-social personality and depression. Family environment plays a major role in decreasing chances of suicides among youth. In Islam, suicide is strictly prohibited.
A companion of Prophet Hazrat Jundab narrates that the Prophet said,
“A man was inflicted with wounds and he committed suicide, and so Allah said:
My slave has caused death on himself hurriedly, so I forbid Paradise for him.”
But remember, every problem has a solution, so one should never lose hope. Suicide is not the way to get relief. In fact this causes the pain forever.
“Just because today is a terrible day doesn’t mean tomorrow won’t be the best day of your Life. You just gotta get there”
In the end, there is a message for all in profound and deep poem written by Artemis:
A girl was just sitting there,
You could see her blank stare.
All the sudden she sighed,
For it turned out she was thinking of suicide.
She was teased at school,
And labeled un-cool.
She didn’t tell anyone how she was feeling,
The truth she kept resealing.
Her friends didn’t want to talk to her,
They all just talked about her in a murmur.
How this girl they hated,
And she never did anything, just let herself be dominated.
She went into the kitchen and grabbed a knife,
Because she has the thought of taking her life.
She went back to room and got a pen,
For now she had a message to send.
She started to write a note goodbye,
But suddenly stopped and realized she didn’t want to die.
Instead she wrote a poem about it,
And it slowly got longer, bit-by-bit.
At the end she wrote,
in a very short quote,
“Suicide should never be a thought,
For life is worth it as long as bad stuff is always fought.”
